VASSAL Restores the Stravinsky Fountain: When Engineering Brings Art to Life

Retour

Just steps away from the Centre Pompidou, the Stravinsky Fountain is coming back to life thanks to the expertise of the Groupe SOTIC VASSAL.

An iconic landmark of the Parisian landscape, the Fountain of the Automatons — also known as the Stravinsky Fountain — was created in 1983 as a tribute to Igor Stravinsky. Made up of sixteen colorful water sculptures, it combines poetry with a celebration of music.

Among them are the iconic Firebird sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle and several works created by Jean Tinguely.

Where Art Meets Engineering
As part of the renovation project launched in 2022, the Groupe SOTIC VASSAL was commissioned to restore the mechanical systems that bring the fountain to life. The goal: motorize the sculptures so they could once again “dance” to the rhythm of the water.

This technical challenge was successfully met by the SOTIC VASSAL teams, who adapted their industrial expertise to a major artistic project. Each sculpture is now equipped with custom-designed motorization systems, restoring the iconic movements that make this extraordinary fountain so magical.

“Groupe SOTIC VASSAL is proud to contribute to the rebirth of the Stravinsky Fountain, merging engineering with art to preserve our cultural heritage.”
Jean-Louis FONTANILLES, Managing Director of Groupe SOTIC VASSAL

A Showcase of French Expertise
This project provided SOTIC VASSAL with the opportunity to demonstrate its ability to combine innovation, technical precision, and respect for artistic vision. More than a technical achievement, this mission reflects the group’s ambition: to place industrial excellence at the service of meaningful, unique, and sensitive projects.

Today, the Stravinsky Fountain has once again become a vibrant cultural and symbolic landmark, thanks to the synergy between artists, engineers, and public institutions.
